Using Cipralex To Deal With Depression

I began taking Cipralex just a few hours ago, after midnight.

I will be blogging about my experiences with this drug. If you would like to learn more and/or follow me on my journey of dealing with depression, then subscribe. Read the remainder of my blog entry for more info on how I got the pills and my thoughts about it.

Lately, I have been trying to get job counselling, in hopes of finding meaningful work. I started at 1 place, and then was sent to a second place. The second place told me that I would only get help from them once I found a way to deal with a case of mild depression, or got a diagnosis.

I originally wanted to try a natural solution [e.g. St John's Wort] instead of going with prescription drugs. I mentioned this to the doctor, and he said that that is what I could do. He also explained that St John's Wort can actually cause liver damage. I am sure that that would not have happened to me, but the possibility of damage was enough to scare me off. I was also hoping for some kind of natural vegetable to give me the hormone/drug/enzyme/whatever levels that I needed, but he said that there was no such vegetable. In short, although he did not pressure me into taking the drugs, I felt that this was the only real alternative.

It was a tough decision for me to make, because I believe that the mind is 1 of the things that we should leave alone, as far as drugs go. If there is a natural benefit with certain natural foods, then I am okay with that. Unfortunately, I feel like I really need some help to get my life jump started. I really feel a sense of desperation.

I have strong feeling that this will lead to nothing, but I'm interested in trying it out, anyways. I will keep you posted.

Have you tried Cipralex? Have you dealt with depression through other means? Do you think that taking drugs to deal with depression is taking a mind altering drug?

  1. Eugene,

TrueHope is an alternative to drugs. It's not some stupid herb, but rather simply vitamins, minerals, and amino acids -- the sort of stuff that every doctor would be fine with. This supplement has been the subject of a fair amount of scientific research, with very good results.

As for psychotropic drugs -- I think it is necessary in some cases, for some people, at least for some portion of their life. Just remember that these things have side effects as well. I don't suppose they're very good for our liver either.

Sometimes, prescription meds can alleviate some symptoms, while causing other problems at the same time. Sometimes they leave you foggy-minded or sleepy. Sometimes they put you in a situation where you are less able to make decisions for yourself.

My best advice is to approach with caution, but still give credibility to your doctor, since that's what he/she is trained for.

    Sincerely,
    Paul

  2. Yeah, I only read the little paper that came with the box, after I took the first bit. It seems that Cipralex also can cause problems with the liver.
