I found out that only certain book sizes are eligible for distribution by Lulu.com. If you want to get a free ISBN number from them, then you'll need to look over which book sizes are available.
The link might not work for some of you. The important thing that I took from it is that A5, which is eligible for distribution, is a good replacement for Digest, which is not eligible.
